How to Help Your Employees Live a Stress-Free Life In and Out of Work

When you work in healthcare, stress tends to come with the job. Keeping it in check, however, is essential to an employee’s productivity, morale and overall well-being. Moreover, it becomes critical to maintaining high-quality patient care and service, as the negative effects of stress will inevitably spill over into a person’s day-to-day performance.

Help your employees minimize stress, on and off the job, by encouraging them to follow these tips:

Eat Right and Exercise

The right diet and fitness regime helps to reduce stress and improve mental as well as physical health.

Healthy eating matters not only to your gut, but also to your brain.

There is increasing evidence that when it comes to mental health, food makes a significant difference. Gut bacteria imbalances may contribute to a number of neurological conditions including anxiety, depression, autism, ADHD and schizophrenia.

Exercise enhances blood flow to the brain and releases endorphins.

Encourage your employees to get in even a few minutes of exercise during their breaks, and to maintain their fitness outside of work as well. If it’s fiscally feasible, offer discounts to gyms and similar facilities. For team building as well as fitness, participate as a company in walks or runs to benefit relevant causes, such as cancer research or a local hospital system.

When You Leave, Turn Work Off

Whenever possible, encourage employees to leave work … at work. They should:

Take vacations.

Multiple studies have shown that vacations are, not surprisingly, effective stress busters. They can also improve productivity and even promote better sleep patterns. Some specialists suggest that taking more frequent, shorter vacations versus one big one each year may offer added benefits. Even a short weekend getaway can help. In fact, the very act of planning a vacation and marking it on your calendar can set the stress-reducing process in motion.

Let employees form a clear line between work time and downtime.

To avoid the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout, people need time to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. This means switching off emails, texts and any other direct contact with work when they’re not there. As noted by the American Psychological Association, it’s critical to “disconnect from time to time, in a way that fits your needs and preferences.”

Offer Flexibility

As an employer, provide as flexible a work environment as possible, to help relieve some of the other pressures in your employees’ lives.

Look for creative ways to help people relieve stress.

For instance, if employees have children, be open to their leaving work early to pick them up from school.

Use technology to your advantage. Facilitate remote work when possible.

This may be more of a challenge in healthcare, but it’s not impossible. As long as people get their work done on time and within budget, try and give them the flexibility to enjoy the things they want and need to do. This is especially important if you want to attract and retain millennials.
