Allied Health Job Opportunities

Posted

Allied health professionals are five million strong in the United States – working in 80 different professions and representing 60 percent of all health care providers. And with the imminent onset of the Affordable Care Act, the nation can expect explosive growth in these numbers.

It’s a good time to be an allied health pro! Consider these statistics:

  • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects a 39 percent increase in physical therapy employment and a 30 percent increase in occupational therapy employment by 2020.
  • The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) forecasts a shortage of 40,394 physical therapists by 2020, based on a 3.5 percent attrition rate. Even if that rate estimation was lowered to just 1.5 percent, there would still be a shortfall of 9,385 PT jobs.
  • At the same time health care law is changing, the nation’s population continues to age. This has led to strengthened demand for occupational therapists, especially those skilled at treating older adults, as well as children with autism and related conditions.
  • The job market for radiologic imaging professionals has been more challenging, as reimbursement cuts have adversely affected some practitioners. However, experts agree this trend may be bottoming out and that an upturn will soon occur.
  • A bright spot in the imaging job market is a continued demand for sonographers. The BLS reports an expected 44 percent growth rate in employment of diagnostic medical sonographers by 2020 and a 28 percent increase in demand for radiologic technologists over the same period.
  • Demand for catheter lab technicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and lab workers remains high. This trend also is likely to continue as more individuals gain health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
